“Eclectic Styles” Workshop with cellist Mike Block

Sunday, November 12, 2017, 5-7 p.m.
The BOP STOP
2920 Detroit Avenue
Cleveland, Ohio

Wow, do we have a great workshop opportunity for all aspiring cellists, of intermediate level* and above—no audition required!  Mike Block, the CCS 2003 Collegiate Division Scholarship Winner, is coming back to Cleveland to play a solo concert.  And before that concert we’ve asked him to share some insights into his world of multi-style cello.

Since leaving Cleveland, Mike has become a pioneering multi-style cellist, singer, composer, and educator, hailed by Yo-Yo Ma as the “ideal musician of the 21st-century” and acclaimed by the NY Times for his “vital rich-hued solo playing”.  A member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, Mike has toured extensively throughout the world with that group, which won a 2017 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.  An active recording artist in his own right of folk music, original material, and cross-cultural collaborations, Mike has partnered with several other pioneering cellists to publish the new book Contemporary Cello Etudes: Studies in Style and Technique, due out in early 2018.

The workshop will explore improvisation and rhythmic playing and participants will learn a non-classical piece of music to apply and develop these skills.

Things will wrap up at 7pm and Mike's show will begin at 7:30 pm, allowing you just enough time to order some delicious food from the BOP STOP kitchen.

If you are looking for a Sunday afternoon adventure, the BOP STOP is the place for you.  Your cello and you will bond in a new way!

Workshop application fee – Participant $45 Auditor $25 (includes ticket for 7:30pm performance)
